FOUR SIGNATURES OF THE GREAT ITALIAN OPERA SINGER
CLAUDIA MUZIO. Records signed: "Claudia Muzio" four times in ink on labels (on front and on verso). Two Columbia record albums, Verdi's Otello (two sides) and Cecilia, an opera by Italian priest/composer Licino Refice, which Muzio sang late in her career (two sides). Records made in Italy. Italian soprano Claudia Muzio (1889-1936) was known for her impressive stage presence and emotional involvement in all the leading Verdi and Puccini roles, including Tosca, Cio-Cio-San (in Madama Butterfly) and Giorgetta. In addition to being a popular performer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for seven seasons (she had made her debut there in Tosca), Muzio was much in demand in the principal South American opera houses. She also performed extensively in Italy, making notable appearances under Toscannini at La Scala in 1926-1927, before singing mostly thereafter in Rome, where she signed this program page. Muzio's unique voice could also be heard on early (1917-1918) Pathé and Edison (1920-1925) recordings as well as later Columbia recordings (1934-1935). In unrelated box picturing Enrico Caruso on front cover. Identifying labels at upper margin of one side of each record. Minor suface scratches on both records. Overall, fine condition.
