TWO SIGNATURES OF THE GREAT ITALIAN SOPRANO
CLAUDIA MUZIO. Record signed: "Claudia Muzio" twice in ink on label (on front and on verso). Columbia recording of Trovatore by Verdi on one side and Spirate Pur, Spirate on other side. Record made in Italy; sleeve imprinted in Italian. Italian soprano Claudia Muzio (1889-1936) was known for her impressive stage presence and emotional involvement in all the leading Verdi and Puccini roles, including Tosca, Cio-Cio-San (in Madama Butterfly) and Giorgetta. In addition to being a popular performer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for seven seasons (she had made her debut there in Tosca), Muzio was much in demand in the principal South American opera houses. She also performed extensively in Italy, making notable appearances under Toscannini at La Scala in 1926-1927, before singing mostly thereafter in Rome, where she signed this program page. Muzio's unique voice could also be heard on early (1917-1918) Pathé and Edison (1920-1925) recordings as well as later Columbia recordings (1934-1935). Minor surface smudges. Identifying label affixed to upper margin of Spirate Pur, Spirate side. Fine condition.
