Color publicity photograph (4x6) of Italian conductor Claudio Abbado-casual, sweater and open neck shirt
Printed photograph signed: "Claudio Abbado", in bold gold ink. C. 4x5¾ captioned at bottom margin. Claudio Abbado (1933-2014) was the son of composer and violist Michelangelo Abbado. After studying at the Milan Conservatory and the Vienna Academy of Music he made his debut at La Scala (1960) and then won the Dmitri Mitropoulos Competition for conductors (1963) - this allowed him to work with the New York Philharmonic for 5 months. Returning to Europe, Abbado conducted the Vienna Philharmonic (for the first time) at the Salzburg Festival in 1965, became the principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (1979-1987) and served as the director for the Vienna State Opera (1986-1991). The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra elected him as their chief conductor (1989-2002). Well known for his work with young musicians, he founded the European Union Youth Orchestra in 1978 and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in 1986. He currently serves as music director of the Mozart Orchestra of Bologna, Italy. Over the years he has been honored with the Imperial Prize of Japan, Mahler Medal, Khytera Prize, the Mozart Metal and honorary doctorates form the universities of Cambridge, Ferrara, Aberdeen and Havana. He won a 1997 Grammy Award in the Best Small Ensemble Performance, 2005 Grammy Award in Best Instrumental Soloist Performance and in 2006, Gramophone magazine awarded his CD Best Orchestral Recording of the Year. Unlike many conductors, Abbado is known for his friendly, understated and un-confrontational manner in rehearsal. Printed copyright information on verso. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slight ink transfer on bottom right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
