Typed letter signed: "Clay" in blue ink, as Owner, True
Center Gate Co., 1p, 8½x11. Phoenix, Arizona, 1993 January 29. To Don
Dee, Albuquerque, N.M. In part: "When I was 31 years old I was trying
to start horses with a barrier, which was a rope that was draped down over the
front of the horses, that was a complete disaster! For the next 9 years I spent
my time trying to come up with the idea of an electronic starting gate that
horses could not break through, so there would be a fair start. I finally did
that in 1939. I have enclosed an article that tells a little bit about my
gate...." The article is included: "Historic Starting Gates Acquired by
Museum", The Quarter House Journal, October 1959. Clay Puett (1900-1998)
debuted his enclosed electric starting gate on July 1, 1939 at Exhibition Park,
Vancouver. An instant success, Puett's gates became the official starting
gate at all major North American race tracks by 1940. True Center gate in
Phoenix still manufacture Puett's gates today. Folds do not touch signature.
