CLAYTON HAMILTON
The drama critic and playwright quotes from Cyrano de Bergerac.
Autograph Quotation signed: "Ce sont les Cadets de Gascogne'/Clayton Hamilton/The Players/New York City/September 28, 1932", 1 page, 5½x7. [translation: "They are the Captains of Gascony."] Clayton Meeker Hamilton (1881-1946), a lecturer on drama at Columbia University, was drama critic and editor for several publications, including Forum, Everybody's Magazine and Vogue. He contributed encyclopedia articles, and also edited Stevenson's Treasure Island for Longman's English Classics. He wrote several books, including The Theory of the Theatre (1910) and Studies in Stagecraft (1914), and co-authored a play, The Big Idea. He has quoted from Edmond Rostand's play Cyrano de Bergerac, a major success from its premiere in 1897. The "Captains of Gascony" were a French regiment composed of upper-class youth from the Gascony region, disbanded by Louis XIV. Cyrano de Bergerac was said to be a member of this corps. There are two unidentified signers on this page, both adding 1932 dates. One, [?} Johnson, has added: "One loves America better knowing you; I shall feel happy if you could say as much of England; for is not this the true patriotism?" Binding holes on left margin. Toned. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
