CLEMENT WOOD
On the very eve of World War II, he condemns the "race-suicidal game of wholesale murder" by the dictatorial governments, and invites his correspondent to visit his own "natural living" community at Bozenkill.
Autograph Letter signed: "Clement Wood", 1 page, 8½x11. Bozenkill, Delanson, New York, 1939 August 28. On personal letterhead to J. Duane Upton, Drake Well Museum, Garland, Pennsylvania. In full: "You are doing a magnificent thing in your museum project in trying to conserve the worthwhile things of the past and present for the future. What a tremendous contrast to the race-suicidal game of wholesale murder the dictatorial governments are seeking to plunge the rest of us into! I congratulate you on your wise Americanism, and wish you and your conference all success in your undertaking. And why not visit Bozenkill, and see how we parallel your efforts, including the conservation of natural living, happiness, and a fiefdom of truth and beauty!" American author Clement Richardson Wood (1888-1950) published poetry, and also a novel, Tom Sawyer Grows Up. His short stories were widely published in pulp magazines, including Telling Tales and Gangster Stories. Wood was a follower of physical culture enthusiast Bernarr MacFadden, who created a chain of "healthoriums" around the US dedicated to his program of diet and exercise. The Drake Well Museum commemorates the site of the first American oil well. Multiple mailing folds. Corners lightly worn and creased. Crease on top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
