CLEMENTINE S. CHURCHILL - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - HFSID 155132
Price: $300.00
CLEMENTINE CHURCHILL. ALS: "Clementine S. Churchill", 2p,
4½x3½, front and verso. Admiralty House, no year or month,
"Tuesday". To "Dear Lady Lever". In full: "Thank
you very much for the Box. It will be a pleasure to go to your play on Friday.
Yours sincerely." CLEMENTINE CHURCHILL (1885-1977) married future British
Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1908 and remained his companion and
confidante until his death in 1965. The Churchills lived in Admiralty
House during both of Winston's terms of service as First Lord of the
Admiralty, 1914-1915 and 1939-1940. A recent collection of their letters
(1999), assembled by daughter Mary Soames, reveals that "Clemmie" took an early
and active interest her husband's politics. Their five children also included
writer Randolph Churchill (1911-1968) and actress Sarah Churchill (1918-1982).
LADY LEVER, born Elizabeth Hulme, was the wife of William Hesketh
Lever, the soap and detergent entrepreneur who founded Lever Brothers. Later
ennobled as Lord Leverhulme, the philanthropist founded the Lady Lever Art
Gallery in Liverpool in 1922, dedicated to his wife's memory. Slightly worn
at edges. Fine condition.
