First Day Cover signed: "Cleveland Amory", 6½x3½. FDC honoring Wildlife Conservation, 8-cent Polar Bear stamp affixed, postmarked Avery Island, LA, June 12, 1971, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Author, journalist and animal rights activist Cleveland Amory (1917-1998) enjoyed a multi-faceted career as an editor (he was the youngest editor of "The Saturday Evening Post"), commentator (The Today Show), critic (TV Guide, 1963-1976), columnist ("The Saturday Review") and radio essayist (Curmudgeon At Large) and was "Parade" magazine's Senior Contributing Editor from 1980-1998. His books include The Proper Bostonians, The Last Resorts and Who Killed Society? Amory, who founded The Fund For Animals in 1967, also wrote three popular "cat" books: The Cat Who Came For Christmas, The Cat and the Curmudgeon and The Best Cat Ever.
