CLIFF DAPPER Signed black and white color postcard of the catcher kneeling in Brooklyn Dodgers colors Photograph signed "Cliff Dapper" in blue ink. Blue ink notations in unknown hand and red ink stamp on verso. B/w, 3½x5½ overall, 3x5 image, one surface. Addressed to Bill Zekus Agency, Fishkill, New York. No message on verso. Cliff Dapper (1920-2011) was an American baseball catcher. He had almost 20 years in the minor leagues as a player and manager, batting a respectable .273 career batting average with 102 home runs. But he caught fire when he got bumped up to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1942. In eight games and 17 at-bats with the Dodgers, he tallied an outstanding .471 batting average, with a home run, nine RBIs and a .706 slugging percentage. But even that wasn't enough to dislodge All-Star catcher Mickey Owen, and Dapper got sent back to the minors. (For the record, Owen made his second trip to the All-Star game in 1942, batting .259 with a .311 slugging percentage, no home runs and 44 RBIs in 421 at-bats) Dapper also has the somewhat odd distinction of being traded for an announcer. He was traded from the Dodger's farm league Montreal Royals to the Atlanta Crackers in exchange for Ernie Harwell, who substituted for and ailing Red Barber in the Dodgers' broadcast booth. Lightly toned and bowed. Signature is lightly beaded, but legible. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Scuff marks in center of photo (not visible head-on). Otherwise, fine condition.
