Typed letter signed: "Clifford Dyment" in black ink. 1 page, 7x9. London, England. February 3, 1937. Addresses to J. Sherston Kilshawe Esq. of the Poetry Society in London, England. In full: "Dear Sir, Thank you for inviting me to read from my new book of poems. I should be happy to do so, and think that the first of the two dates (February 24th) would suit me. Yours faithfully". Clifford Dyment (1914-1971) was a British poet, journalist, literary critic and editor best known for his works on the English countryside. Raised in Caerleon-on-Usk in Wales, his father died in WWI when Dyment was four years old and his famous poem "The Son" is about Dyment discovering a letter written by his father just before his death. His first published collection of poems was First Day (1935), after which Dyment was considered a serious literary figure in London, and he went on to publish many other works such as The Axe in the Wood (1944), Experiences and Places (1955), and a biography titled C. Day-Lewis (1963). He received the Rockefeller Foundation Atlantic Award in 1950 and his poem "As a boy with a richness of needs I wandered" was included into The Oxford Book of Twentieth Century English Verse (1971). Normal mailing folds. Toned. Small puncture in left margin. Creased throughout, especially the corners. Red and gray pencil notes throughout in unknown hand. Slightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
