CLIFTON CRAWFORD
Picture post card with a full-length b/w photo of comedian Clifton Crawford, in tux and cane and pulling on white gloves, as Tony Chute from the Broadway musical The Quaker Girl. Signed and dated "Sincerely Yours" in 1912.
Picture post card "Sincerely Yours/Clifton Crawford/1912". B/w, 3¼x5¼ overall, 3x4¾ image, one surface. Blank message side. This is a post card from the 1911-2 Broadway performance of The Quaker Girl at the Park Theatre and Grand Opera Theatres, which also featured songs with lyrics by Crawford. Crawford (c. 1875-1920, born in Edinburgh, Scotland) was a comedian known on both sides of the Atlantic as well as a Broadway lyrcist, performer and writer. Crawford almost didn't become an entertainer. He lost his job as a church organist when the pastor found him playing Scotch dance music on the organ, so he became a golf instructor or some repute. He fell back into show biz when we was discovered giving a performance at the Providence Golf Club. Crawford went on collect 19 Broadway credits as a performer, lyricist and writer between 1901 and 1920, including the World War I Musical Her Soldier Boy (1916-7). Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Pinholes at top edge of card. Image is scuffed (not visible head-on) and scratched. Adhesive residue on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
