CLIFTON R. BRECKINRIDGE
The U.S. Representative from Arkansas signs his name in black ink
Signature: "C.R. Breckinridge./ Pine Bluff./ Arks." in black ink. 7¼x2¾ clipping. Clifton R. Breckinridge (1846-1832) was a prominent nineteenth-century political figure from Arkansas, part of the illustrious Breckinridge family as the son of Vice President of the U.S. and Confederate General John C. Breckinridge, and the great-grandson of U.S. Senator and U.S. Attorney General John Breckinridge. He served in the Confederate Army with his father, rising to the rank of midshipman with the Confederate Navy; after the war he decided on a life in public service. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1882, serving for six terms; Breckinridge's political career came into great danger after the 1888 election, when Arkansas Democrats were found guilty of voting fraud, and upon contestation his opponent, John M. Clayton (brother of former Arkansas Governor Powell Clayton) was assassinated by gunshot. Breckinridge resigned in 1894 to accept President Cleveland's nomination of Minister to Russia, which he served for three years, and in 1900 he was appointed by President McKinley to a position on the Dawes Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory, where he distributed individual allotments of tribal land to the Cherokee. Irregularly cut. Left edge frayed and slightly torn. Toned. Pinpoint stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
