CLIVE BROOK
Shown manacled to a table in Loves of a Dictator, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Clive Brook". B/w, 8x10. Shown in a movie still from 1935. The original printed title, Farewell to Love, has been crossed out by Brook and replaced with the revised title, "Loves of a Dictator". Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: July 10, 1935. Clive Brook (1887-1974), a veteran of World War I, became a star of the English stage and screen, debuting on stage in 1918 and making his first film in 1920 and his first Hollywood film in 1924. Among his stage performances were roles in Oliver Twist, The Importance of Being Earnest, Voysey Inheritance and If I Were King. He played Sherlock Holmes three times in The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1929), Sherlock Holmes (1932, when he also starred in Shanghai Express) and in the movie revue Paramount on Parade (1930). Concentrating on theatre after 1950, he made only one more film after 1950: The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), where he had third billing after George C. Scott and Dana Winter. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Fine condition.
