CLIVE BROOK
Large 12¾x10 sepia-toned photo of a brooding Clive Brook in a smoking jacket, holding a pipe and sitting in an armchair
Photograph signed "To Fred Graf with/sincere gratitude/Clive Brook". B/w sepia-toned, 12¾x10, printed on cardstock. Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. Brook (1887-1974, born Clifford Hardman Brook in London) was a British actor. A veteran of World War I, became a star of the English stage and screen, debuting on stage in 1918 and making his first film in 1920 and his first Hollywood film in 1924. Among his stage performances were roles in Oliver Twist, The Importance of Being Earnest, Voysey Inheritance and If I Were King. He played Sherlock Holmes three times in The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1929), Sherlock Holmes (1932, when he also starred in Shanghai Express) and in the movie revue Paramount on Parade (1930). His film career virtually ended after 1944, and he concentrated on theatre after this. He made only one film after 1950, The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), where he had third billing after George C. Scott and Dana Winter. Lightly toned, soiled, silvered, cracked, creased and bowed. Missing bottom right corner. Light tear in top edge. Paper loss in top left corner and near bottom right corner. Light wear along edges, with light chipping in left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
