CLYDE BEATTY
The animal trainer and circus leader signs with "best wishes" on this
pink album leaf
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best wishes/Clyde Beatty", in
blue pencil, 5¼x4½. Clyde Beatty (1903-1965) was a lion tamer and animal
trainer best remembered for his "fighting act," in which he entered a cage of
snarling beasts armed only with a bullwhip and a pistol strapped to his hip.
By the 1930s, Beatty owned outright or allowed his name to be used by different
circuses for which he performed. He eventually had his own circus, which he
merged with Cole Bros. Circus to form the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus.
Beatty was also popular in feature films during the 1930s and 1950s.
Unrelated photograph affixed to verso. Small tear on top edge. Corners slightly
worn. Toned in center. Otherwise, fine condition.
