1933 bust pencil drawing by Frank H. Watt of lion tamer Clyde Beatty, surrounded by lion taming motifs and Beatty in his famous chair-and-bullwhip act. Signed by Beatty and the artist.
Original Art Signed: "Best Wishes/Clyde Beatty." in black ink and by "Frank H Watt/10-11-33" as the artist. Lead pencil and blue ink drawing, 8¼x11 overall, 8x10¾ image, one surface, drawn on cardstock. Titled: "Hac[obscured by drawing of lion]eck-Wallace". Captioned at bottom: "791/At Waco with circus". BEATTY (1903-1965) was a lion tamer and animal trainer best remembered for his "fighting act," in which he entered a cage of snarling beasts armed only with a bullwhip and a pistol strapped to his hip. By the 1930s, Beatty owned outright or allowed his name to be used by different circuses for which he performed. Beatty was also popular in feature films during the 1930s and 1950s. WATT (1889-1981) was an artist trained as a professional lithographer who lived in Waco, Texas most of his life. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
