Fitch, who died in 1909, has had his plays produced almost 70 times on
Broadway.
Signature: "Clyde Fitch./1901". 3x2 card. A prolific
playwright who produced over 30 original plays and over 20 adaptations, Fitch
(1865-1909) was known for social satires and character studies with
realistic dialogue. He began by writing short stories for magazines after
graduating from Amherst College in 1886 and created his first significant play -
Beau Brummell, written for actor Richard Mansfield - in 1890. His plays
were popular in both the U. S. and Europe; he had almost 70 Broadway credits
between 1890 and 1938, with Beau Brummell appearing on Broadway no less
than eight times between 1890 and 1916, and his plays were adapted into
movies and TV shows over 30 times between 1913 and 1954. His most important
plays include The Climbers (1901), Captain Jinks of the Horse
Marines (1901), The Girl with the Green Eyes (1902), The Truth
(1907), and The City (1909). Lightly toned and bowed. Signature has bled
lightly but is legible. Otherwise in fine condition.
