CLYDE McCOY
Handwritten signed "thank you" note, with a newspaper photo attached
Autograph Note signed: ""Thanks/for/everything/George -/Clyde McCoy", 7½x4¾ album leaf with 2x1½ newspaper photograph attached. (McCoy has drawn both capital "C"s to resemble the treble cleft sign.) Clyde McCoy (1903-1990) born to the mountain family famed for its feud with the Hatfields, was a trumpet player and band leader for six decades but had his greatest popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. As a trumpeter he was known for his "wah-wah" mute, which could produce a wide range of sounds. His bands, which played mostly Dixieland and swing, had moderate success in ball rooms before McCoy's theme song, "Sugar Blues" became a big hit in 1930 and led to recording contracts. During World War II, the entire band enlisted in the US Navy and entertained troops throughout the war. McCoy co-founded Downbeat magazine in 1935. Irregular edges. Ink number (unknown hand) at lower left corner. Lightly toned.
