CLYDE TOMBAUGH, JAMES CHRISTY and GLENN SEABORG
Discoverers of Pluto, of Plutonium, and of Pluto's moon Charon (named in honor of the fourth signer, his wife).
Typescript signed: "Clyde W. Tombaugh/19 June 1991", "J W Christy", "Char Christy" and "Glenn T. Seaborg", 2p, 8½x11, separate sheets. Titled: "Pluto - The Planet and Plutonium - The Element". Excerpt from The 1991 Information Please Almanac about Pluto and CLYDE W. TOMBAUGH (1907-1997) who discovered the ninth planet in 1930, JAMES W. CHRISTY, who discovered Pluto's moon in 1978 and named it Charon in honor of his wife, and the element Plutonium discovered by GLENN T. SEABORG (1912-1999) in 1940. Seaborg, who chaired the Atomic Energy Commission (1961-1971) and helped negotiate the nuclear test ban treaty, now has an element named after him: Seaborgium. Charon (pronounced with a "K" sound) ferried the dead to the afterlife, according to Greek mythology. However, Christy's wife was pronounced with an "Sh" sound, and that has become the accepted pronunciation of the moon's name. Lightly creased at blank margins, staple holes at upper left blank corners. Two ¼-inch tears at lower left blank edge of both sheets. Overall, fine condition.
