COLE PORTER
He signs a scathing, handwritten letter, berating "Mrs. S." for giving away the wrong French painting: "... get the Maquette back quick. Shame!!"
Autograph Letter Signed: "C. P." in pencil, 2 pages, 8¼x5¾, front and verso. No place, 1955 May 6. On letterhead of the Grand Hotel Roma to "Dear Mrs. S-". In full: "By your letter of May 3rd I note that you gave Ernie Martin the wrong picture, if you gave him the picture on the north-west wall of 41C. This is a Maguette of a ballet,-it shows a girl standing in a doorway. (Diaghileff gave it to me). The Utrillo is the picture that was on the West wall south of the air-conditioner. It is a scene of the streets of Paris with the dome of Sacre' Coeur in the background. Give him the Utrillo & get the Maquette back quick. Shame !! Best " Cole Porter (1891-1964), known for his bouncy, lively style and witty lyrics, was a successful Broadway composer by 1928. He composed music and lyrics for more than 20 musicals, including Anything Goes (1934), Kiss Me, Kate (1948), Silk Stockings (1955) and High Society (1956). His classic songs include "Night and Day," "Begin the Beguine" and "I've Got You Under My Skin". Porter injured his legs in a horseback riding accident in 1937, and had his right leg amputated. He refused to use an artificial limb and became a recluse in his apartment at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Lightly creased. Stray ink marks. Overall, fine condition.
