The railroad magnate signs a stock certificate for expanding his railroads.
Stock Certificate signed: "C.P. Huntington" as President, 1p, 11½x15½. New York, 1886 November 5. Certifying "That John C. Bogart is entitled to Two Shares of One Hundred Dollars each in the Capital Stock of the Newport News and Mississippi Valley Company". The capitalization is $50 million. Attached to the bottom edge of the 11½x7¾ certificate are twenty dividend coupons, each with a punched hole. At the time of this stock issue, Huntington was focused on investing in two railroads, the Southern Pacific and the Chesapeake & Ohio, for which this issue for the Newport News and Mississippi Valley was part. He acquired the Chesapeake & Ohio in 1869, became its President and extended its line under charters from Huntington, West Virginia to Memphis, Tennessee. He founded the town of Newport News, Virginia as its deep-water terminus. Fine condition.
