joined the 37th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1862, following his
graduation from Williams College, rising to the rank of brevet colonel in
the Union cause. He practiced private law until his appointment as Chief
Clerk of the US Court of Claims, Washington, D. C., in 1873. Ink slightly
smeared, but legible. Irregularly cut. Toned. Slightly soiled. Ink notes
(unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
