DONALD H. PETERSON
Envelope commemorating the Enterprise space shuttle signed by one of the Challenger's maiden crewmembers
Commemorative envelop signed "Don Peterson". 6½x3½. With blue monochrome cachet on left of the Enterprise piggybacking on a 747 transport, followed by a chase plane. Postmarked Saint Louis, Missouri, Aug. 11, 1979. With one 15¢ American flag stamp affixed. Enterprise the first space shuttle built for NASA. Rolled out on Sept. 17, 1976, it had no engines or heat shield and was made primary for ground tests and air flights. Its maiden flight was on Feb. 18, 1977, piggybacking on a 747 transport like the one pictured on this envelope. Peterson (born in 1933), a 1955 graduate of West Point, was selected by NASA for astronaut training in September 1969. A member of the astronaut support crew for Apollo 16, he continued with NASA after retiring from the military and was a Mission Specialist aboard STS-6, the maiden voyage of the space shuttle Challenger. During the mission (April 4-April 9, 1983), Peterson and fellow mission specialist Dr. F. Story Musgrave conducted an EVA. After resigning from NASA in November 1984, Peterson became a consultant in the field of manned aerospace operations. Lightly toned, rippled and spotted. Upper right corner is lightly rounded. Otherwise in fine condition.
