Commemorative cover signed "Don Peterson". Color, 10x8.Commemorating the Enterprise
space shuttle. Postmarked New York, NY, March 31, 1978, with "Space
Achievements/Interpex Station" cancellation.With one 13¢ stamp commemorating the
50th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's solo trans-Atlantic flight. Captioned: "This
impressive scene was photographed when the NASA 747 carrier and five T-38 aircraft flew
over the Shuttle Orbiter while it was parked on the runway at Edwards Air Force Base
after completion of the mission." Interpex is one of the largest stamp collecting shows in
the world. This cancellation appears to be from Interpex 78. Peterson (1933-2018), a
1955 graduate of West Point, was selected by NASA for astronaut training in
September 1969. A member of the astronaut support crew for Apollo 16, he continued
with NASA after retiring from the military and was a Mission Specialist aboard STS-6,
the maiden voyage of the space shuttle Challenger. During the mission (April 4-April
9, 1983), Peterson and fellow mission specialist Dr. F. Story Musgrave conducted an
EVA. After resigning from NASA in November 1984, Peterson became a consultant in the
field of manned aerospace operations. Lightly toned. Light crease in lower left corner.
