DONALD H. PETERSON
This color cover of the Enterprise space shuttle is signed by of the Challenger's first crewmembers
Commemorative cover signed "Don Peterson". Color, 10x8.Commemorating the Enterprise space shuttle. Postmarked New York, NY, March 31, 1978, with "Space Achievements/Interpex Station" cancellation. With one 13¢ stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's solo trans-Atlantic flight. Captioned: "This impressive scene was photographed when the NASA 747 carrier and five T-38 aircraft flew over the Shuttle Orbiter while it was parked on the runway at Edwards Air Force Base after completion of the mission." Interpex is one of the largest stamp collecting shows in the world. This cancellation appears to be from Interpex 78. Peterson (1933-2018), a 1955 graduate of West Point, was selected by NASA for astronaut training in September 1969. A member of the astronaut support crew for Apollo 16, he continued with NASA after retiring from the military and was a Mission Specialist aboard STS-6, the maiden voyage of the space shuttle Challenger. During the mission (April 4-April 9, 1983), Peterson and fellow mission specialist Dr. F. Story Musgrave conducted an EVA. After resigning from NASA in November 1984, Peterson became a consultant in the field of manned aerospace operations. Lightly toned. Light crease in lower left corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
