First Day Cover signed: "Duane Graveline/M.D.", in blue ink, 6¾x3¾. Flight surgeon Duane
E. Graveline (1931-2016) is one of the foremost experts on weightlessness deconditioning,
experimenting with the practice during his research with NASA and the U.S. Air Force. He
first began studying the process while studying at the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory,
and has continued to study it in recent years. He also served in mission control during the
Mercury and Gemini space programs and was trained as an astronaut (1965), but
ultimately chose not to travel to space and instead return to private medical practice. The
surgeon has published a prolific amount of medical works based on his studies with NASA
and the Air Force, and has recently had a particular focus on statin drug research. In addition
to his more serious writing, Graveline also enjoys writing science fiction novels. Slightly
