Frank Borman sends a typed letter with the information on the Board
of Directors meeting.
Typed Letter signed: "Frank Borman", 1p, 7¼x10½. On official
letterhead as Chairman, President and CEO of Eastern Airlines. Miami,
Florida, 1977 October 7. To Charles Russhon, Catylist, New York, New York.
In full: "Eastern Airlines will hold its Board of Directors meeting in
New York on October 25. We are planning a reception and luncheon that day and I
hope you can attend. We would like to give our Board and senior management an
opportunity to meet business and civic leaders in the Metropolitan area and tell
you about our company. The reception will begin at 12:00 Noon in the Grand
Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria, followed by luncheon at 12:30 p.m. After the
luncheon, I will update you on Eastern's current position, with particular
reference to our New York/New Jersey operation. Please let me know if you can
join us. Sincerely." Borman, selected as an astronaut in 1962, was part
of the two-man crew of the Gemini 7 in December 1965. On December 15,
he and Jim Lovel participated in the first space rendezvous mission,
coming within a foot of Gemini 6, manned by Tom Stafford and Wally
Schirra. Borman led the first team of American astronauts to circle the Moon
as Commander of the 1968 Apollo 8 mission. Borman retired from NASA
and joined Eastern Airlines in 1969 as a special advisor. In 1975, he was
elected President and Chief Operating Officer of Eastern, becoming Chief
Executive Officer in 1975 and Chairman of the Board in December 1976. He
retired in 1986, six years before Eastern Airlines ceased to exist.
