Sale Price $396.00
GORDON COOPER. TLS: "Gordon Cooper", 1p, 8x10½. NASA, Houston, Texas, 1963 June 12. To B.G. MacNabb (sic, McNabb), General Dynamics/Astronautics, Cocoa Beach, Florida. In part: "The pictures arrived and, I might add, were pretty good- -considering they were taken by a non-professional...They will be given a permanent place in the family album." McNABB was Operations Manager at the Air Force Missile Test Center at Cape Canaveral (1955-1963) and Director of Operations (1962-1963), responsible for all the orbital flights of Project Mercury. He was, traditionally, the last man to shake the astronaut's hand as he stepped from the trailer to the launch pad elevator. Four weeks earlier, COOPER (1927-2004), an original Mercury astronaut, piloted the Faith 7 spacecraft on a 22-orbit mission (May 15-16, 1963), which concluded the operational phase of Project Mercury. The pictures McNabb took were probably of Cooper on launch day. Lightly creased. Glue remnant on verso shows through to letterhead. Overall, fine condition.
