GREG "PAPPY" BOYINGTON. Book inscribed and signed: "May 24, 1977/To Stephanie & Dominic -/With Black Sheep/One's Blessings -/Always -/Pappy Boyington", 384p, 6x8¾. Gregory Boyington, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Fresno: Wilson Press, 1958. Hardcover with dust jacket. Inscribed on half-title page. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (1912-1988) joined the Marines in 1936. In 1941, he joined the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) during World War II in China. He formed his own squadron (VMF-214) in 1943, consisting of new and veteran pilots, based in the Solomon Islands. Some of the veterans had previously been reprimanded for disciplinary problems. They became known as the "Black Sheep" Squadron, celebrated in the TV series of the same name (1976-1978). On January 3, 1944, Boyington shot down three enemy aircraft before being shot down himself. He spent the next 20 months as a Prisoner of War. During this period he was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Dust jacket slightly worn and frayed at top edge. Pinhead-sized spot on outer edge of pages. Otherwise, fine condition.
