APOLLO 15: JIM IRWIN and AL WORDEN
Lunar Module Pilot Jim Irwin, who walked on the Moon during the mission, and
Command Module pilot Al Worden sign an envelope commemorating the lift off from
the moon for the Apollo 15 mission.
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Al Worden" and "Jim Irwin", 6½x3¾. Commemorative
Cover for the Apollo 15 mission, 8-cent United States flag stamp affixed, postmarked Cape
Canaveral, Florida, August 2, 1971. The Apollo 15 mission, whose lunar module, Falcon,
landed on the Moon on July 30th, was the first designed to explore the Moon over longer
periods, greater ranges and with more instruments for the collection of scientific data than
previous missions. To accomplish these goals, the mission included the introduction of a
$40 million lunar roving vehicle, which reached a top speed of 10 mph across the Moon's
surface. Irwin, who was the Lunar Module Pilot, and astronaut Dave R. Scott, who was
the Commander of the mission, rode over 17 miles on the Moon as Command Module
Pilot Al Worden orbited overhead in the Endeavor. Their lunar liftoff on August 2nd was
the first to be televised. Apollo 15 returned to Earth on August 7, 1971. Air Force test pilot
JAMES BENSON "JIM" IRWIN (1930-1991) was the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo
15 mission, walking and riding on the Moon. Moved by his experience in space, Irwin
resigned from NASA and the Air Force in 1972 to form an evangelical Christian
organization, the High Flight Foundation. In 1982, he led an ascent to the summit of
Mount Ararat in an unsuccessful search for Noah's Ark. ALFRED MERRILL "AL"
WORDEN (1932-2020) was serving in the U.S. Air Force when he was among the 19
astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. A member of the astronaut support crew for
Apollo 9 and the backup command module pilot for Apollo 12, Worden was the command
module pilot for Apollo 15. He logged 38 minutes of EVAs outside the "Endeavor". Worden
was later President of Maris Worden Aerospace, Inc. and Vice President of BF Goodrich
Aerospace (Bucksville, Ohio). Slightly creased. Stamp address at lower right. Fine condition.
