JOHN E. BLAHA
The USA astronaut writes from the Discovery Space Ship, reporting his sightings from space as they travel across India
Document Signed: "For You/John Blaha," in blue felt tip ink. 8½x11, 6 pages. In part: "I finally have the opportunity to reflect on the unbelievable sight below me from my unique orbital vantage point 340 miles above planet earth. Up here the planet appears as a huge sphere soaring through the black universe. The blue oceans and white clouds are the predominant features. There are no words or pictures which can adequately describe the stunning colors caused by the sun's reflections off the planet. The planet would be very dark if that 'lightbulb' we call the sun ever went out." The STS-33 mission launched on Wednesday, November 22, 1989. US Air Force Colonel John E. Blaha (b. 1942), a fighter pilot and test pilot with 361 combat missions in Vietnam, became an astronaut in 1980. He made 5 spaceflights (1989-1997), serving as Pilot of shuttle missions STS-29 and STS-33, and as Mission Commander on STS-43 and STS-48. His final orbital mission was as Engineer 2 on the Russian Mir space station. Blaha logged 161 days in space. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
