Captioned at lower right: "Demating of the space shuttle Enterprise at Edwards AFB, California, to be transported overland to Palmdale, California." Not addressed. Air Force pilot John M. Fabian, who flew over 90 combat missions in Vietnam, was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978 and officially became an astronaut in August 1979. Fabian logged over 316 hours in space as a Mission Specialist on two space shuttle flights: STS-7 (Challenger), June 18-24, 1983, and STS-51G, June 17-24, 1985, which deployed three communications satellites. Fabian, who left NASA on January 1, 1986 to become Director of Space, Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations, Headquarters USAF, retired from the Air Force in June 1987. Slightly creased.
