John T. Averill, a U. S. Representative from Minnesota, wrote this letter on his paper business' stationery in 1873. In it, he answers the recipient's question of whether he was ever a member of the Minnesota State Legislature.
Autograph letter signed "Jno. T. Averill". 1 page, 7½x9½, on ruled stationery of Averill, Russell & Carpenter Paper, Blank Books and Stationery. May 6, 1873. Addressed to Mr. C. A. McCollough. In full: "Dear Sit I have yours of 2d inst., asking if I have at any time been a member of the Minn State Senate In reply I would state. I was a member of that body. in 1859 & 1860 Very Resplly". Maine-born Averill (1825-1889) was Republican U. S. Representative from Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District (1871-1873) and the first representative from that state's 3rd Congressional District (1873-1875). He was a member of the Minnesota State Legislature from 1859 until the start of the American Civil War. He was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Minnesota Volunteer Infantry in 1862, earning a promotion to colonel in 1864 and a brevet of brigadier general in 1865. After the war, he worked in the wholesale paper and stationery businesses. Averill was also a member of the Republican National Committee from Minnesota (1868-1880). Lightly toned and creased. Ink transference, which touches signature and body of letter. Body of letter, but not signature, is lightly smeared in places but legible. Folded in half horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Show-through from mounting residue on verso (does not touch signature). Otherwise in fine condition.
