Clockwise from top left:Sepp Prentl”, “A. Huebner / 3 Flak I/33”, “Hermann Eggers / Hauptmann 3/Flak Regt 64”, “Rudy Cleve / (illegible) Flak Rgt. 4”, and “Max Hecht / Oberst 4 Flak Div.”. The envelope, 6½x4½, features a color cachet that honors the 50th anniversary of the No. 2 Squadron RAF regiment. Envelope dated and postmarked April 7, 1972, postmarked at Colerne, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England. Four pence stamp affixed featuring the geography of Jersey, England, off the coast of Normandy, France. The color illustration is of an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, a frontline medium-sized bomber that was used by the RAF on the front lines until 1942. Over 1,800 of these planes were built. After 1942, many remained in use for military transport. Verso features stamped descriptions of each officers' WWII experiences, untranslated from German. Inside envelope are unsigned black and white photographs of the Luftwaffe officers with their aircraft and anti-aircraft weapons. Major Josef “Sepp” Prentl (1916-1996) was a Major who served Nazi Germany during WWII. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, an honor bestowed to only 882 people ever. From 1974-1978, he was a member of the Bavarian parliament. As a Luftwaffe fighting ace, Prentl allegedly destroyed 25 tanks. All of the other four following signers were awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Oberst (Colonel) Max Hecht is the highest ranking officer who signed this envelope. He commanded the 4th Flak division of the Luftwaffe from November 1944 to April 1945. Hauptmann (Captain) Rudolf Cleve (1919-1997) was captured by British troops in 1945 and was subsequently released. He took part in the Defense of the Reich air battle, a final stand by the Luftwaffe force to defend Germany. Hauptmann (Captain) Arnold Huebner (1919-1981) was involved in a number of different battles, predominantly as part of the North African Campaign. He later fought against Allied Forces during Operation Overlord and in the final air attack of the Luftwaffe in the Defense of the Reich. Hauptmann (Captain) Hermann Eggers (1914-2006) also participated in the Defense of the Reich air attack. Before that, he was a prominent air fighter on the Eastern Front, predominantly against Russian forces. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
