RICHARD E. COLE (DOOLITTLE RAIDER)
Signature: "RECole/copilot crew #1", 5x3 card. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, 80 men on
16 B-25 bombers took off from the carrier USS Hornet on April 18, 1942. The raid,
which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in
retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in
Tokyo, Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when
Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Richard Cole (1915-2019) was the
co-pilot of Plane #1, piloted by Lt. Col Doolittle himself, which incinerated a Tokyo
factory. The crew bailed out over China; all returned home safely. Cole continued to serve
in the China-Burma-India Theatre into 1944. Remaining in the peacetime Air Force, his
duties included Operations Advisor to the Venezuelan Air Force (1959-1962). Fine condition.
