RICHARD "MIKE" MULLANE
He signs a First Day Cover honoring the Viking mission to Mars.
First Day Cover signed: "Mike Mullane", 6½x3½. FDC celebrating the Viking Project/Mission to Mars, postmarked Hampton, Virginia, July 20, 1978, 15-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Richard "Mike" Mullane graduated from West Point in 1967 and flew 134 combat missions for the Air Force in Vietnam (1969). Mullane joined the astronaut corps in 1979, and flew three times as a mission specialist on a space shuttle: in 1984, during Discovery's maiden voyage, and in 1988 and 1990 aboard Atlantis. He logged 356 hours in space, and has since written four books about astronauts and space travel. He doesn't seem too proud of his one novel, Red Sky, which he self-deprecatingly describes as "Tom Clancy meets Jackie Collins"; but Riding Rockets, his candid, unsentimental memoir of his experience as an astronaut, earned much critical praise. Glue remnants at lower right. Lightly worn at corners. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
