Springer (b. 1942), a retired Marine Corps aviator flying more than 500 combat sorties during the Vietnam War, flew as a mission specialist on Discovery STS-29 (1989), and Atlantis STS-38 (1990). Prior to his space flights, Springer was a support crew member and concept developer for the Space Operations Center. The astronaut has been awarded several honors for his military and astronaut services, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medal, and NASA Space Flight Medal.
