II. Originally from Corsicana, Texas, Bitner entered military service in
1942 and trained to become a naval officer. During the war he served in the
Mediterranean Sea, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Greece, Egypt and Cuba.
A surgeon, after the war he was stationed in San Diego and later Washington D.C.
