SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM: ROBERT OVERMEYER, CHARLIE HAYES and GLENN PINGREY
All sign an envelope commemorating the Space Shuttle training program.
Envelope signed: "Bob Overmeyer", "Charlie Hayes", "Glenn Pingrey, 6½x3½. Air Mail Envelope postmarked White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, November 1, 1977. Ink stamp cachet honors the Grumman Gulfstream II shuttle training aircraft. Typed caption: "Astronaut- Bob Overmeyer/Instr. - Charlie Hayes/Flt. Eng. - Glenn Pingrey/Practice simulated landings." U.S. Marine Corps Colonel ROBERT OVERMEYER, who was first chosen for the USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program in 1966, was later selected as a NASA astronaut. His maiden voyage, on the Columbia space shuttle (November 11-16, 1982) with Vance Brand, William Lenoir and Joseph Allen, was the first time four crew members were sent into space. Overmyer was later part of the seven member international crew of the Challenger space shuttle (April 29-May 6, 1985), which carried the European Spacelab module. He was 59 when he died in the crash of the VK30 prototype plane he was testing. Former Air Force pilot CHARLIE HAYES was manager and chief instructor pilot of the NASA's Shuttle Training Aircraft. GLENN PINGREY, as the caption notes, was a flight engineer. The mission of the flight engineer is to monitor aircraft system safety and performance. Fine condition.
