WALTER CUNNINGHAM
Walter Cunningham sends a typed letter to Apollo 15 astronaut James B. Irwin inviting
him to the dedication of Tranquility Park in Houston.
Typed Letter Signed: "Walt", 1p, 7¼x10½. No place, 1979 June 11. To Apollo 15
astronaut James B. Irwin. In full: "As the 10th anniversary of the first lunar landing
approaches, so does the dedication of Tranquility Park in Houston's downtown Civic Center.
Tranquility Park commemorates the culmination of America's lifelong dream to reach the moon.
Under the leadership of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, thousands of Houstonians have
contributed to this development of three city blocks into an attractive green space that serves as
both a park and an educational site. The dedication is Friday, July 20 at 12:00. Formal
invitations will be sent in July, but I would like you to put this date on your calendar and join us
for the ceremony and a special luncheon afterwards where you will be one of the committee's
honored guests. You are probably receiving many requests in this tenth anniversary year of Neil's
landing, but I am hopeful you will accept this opportunity to return to the city where we spent
some of the most productive years of our lives. Please let me know if you can join us. Sincerely,"
