A questionnaire filled out by the X-15 pilot, citing his favorite
food as 'steak' and his favorite film as The Quiet Man
Questionnaire signed: "Wm J Knight", 6½x3¾ card. His
handwritten responses to a series of printed, personal questions: favorite
animal - "Horse"; favorite food - "steak"; favorite movie -
"The Quiet Man"; favorite song - "Wind Beneath My Wings". On
October 3, 1967, Air Force Col. William J. "Pete" Knight (1929-2004) piloted the
modified X-15A-2 to a speed of 4,520 mph (Mach 6.7), the highest speed ever
attained in an airplane. After nearly ten years of test flying at Edwards
AFB, he went to Southeast Asia in 1968 where he completed a total of 253 combat
sorties in the F-100. Knight has been inducted into the National Aviation
Hall of Fame (1988), the Aerospace Walk of Honor (1990) and the International
Space Hall of Fame (1998). Ink note on verso (no show through). Fine
