WILLIAM BOWER
Doolittle Raid Pilot
Photograph signed: "Bill Bower". B/w, 10x8. William "Bill" Bowers, shown here with his crew, piloted one of the 16 B-25 bombers launched from the U.S. carrier Hornet for the first raid on Tokyo (April 18, 1942). Forced like the other planes to launch early, Bowers and his crew bailed out over the coast of China. The raid did little damage to Japan, but was a big boost to U.S. morale and helped to convince the Japanese high command to launch their unsuccessful assault on Midway, a turning point in the war. Bower served later in the European Theater of World War II and remained in the Air Force, retiring as a colonel in 1968. Ink note on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
