WILLIAM R. "BILL" POGUE
Letter from the NASA astronaut speaking about the Apollo 13 mission
Autograph letter signed: "Bill P.", 1p, 8x10½. No place, no date. To Dave. In full: "International cooperation was offered during the Apollo 13 emergency. In the event of being marooned in space the prime consideration is consummables (sic) and the next, rescue." The April 11-17, 1970, Apollo 13 mission to land on the moon was aborted when a service module oxygen tank ruptured. Because of the experience gained in successfully rescuing the crew, Apollo 13 was classified as a "successful failure". William R. "Bill" Pogue (1930-2014), a Korean War veteran and a former member of the Air Force Thunderbirds, trained aerospace research pilots before being accepted into NASA's astronaut program in 1966. A member of the astronaut support crews for Apollo missions 7, 9 and 14, he later piloted Skylab-4, the third and final manned visit to the orbital workshop (1973-1974). This mission was the longest manned space flight up to that time, 84 days. Colonel Pogue retired from the Air Force in 1975 to pursue a career as a private consultant and to produce videos about space flight. Folds, not at signature. Lightly creased. Corners slightly worn and creased. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
