This photograph was taken three months after Gagarin became the first man in space. The Soviet cosmonaut and an unidentified man are carrying a wreath of roses down a street as a crowd of people watch. On April 12, 1961, 27-year-old Major Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth in Vostok 1 for a flight that lasted only one hour and 48 minutes. Three weeks later, America's first man in space, Alan Shepard, completed a 15-minute suborbital flight. In 1967, Gagarin began training for the first Soyuz flight. On March 27, 1968, at the age of 34,he was killed when the jet he was test piloting crashed. His ashes were buried alongside other Soviet heroes in the Kremlin Wall. Worn at top edge. Creased at corners and margins, including area near handwriting (not affecting signature or inscription). Otherwise, fine condition.
