VOSTOK COSMONAUTS: YURI GAGARIN, GHERMAN S. TITOV, ANDRIYAN NIKOLAYEV and PAVYEL POPOVICH 6x4½ signed photograph of the first four Soviets in space Photograph signed: "Gagarin", "Nikolayev", "Popovich" and "Titov" in Russian. B/w, 6x4¼ overall, image 6x3¼ (one surface). Each has signed beneath his image (signatures listed left to right). On April 12, 1961, YURI GAGARIN (1934-1968), aboard Vostok 1, made the first space flight by a human being (1 hour 48 minutes). GHERMAN S. TITOV (1935-2000) then made the first multi-orbital flight aboard Vostok 2 (17 orbits in 25 hours 18 minutes, August 6-7, 1961). The first dual launch took place on August 11 and 12, 1962. Vostok 3, with ANDRIYAN NIKOLAYEV (1929-2004) aboard, and Vostok 4, manned by PAVYEL POPOVICH (1930-2009), came within three miles of each other during the first orbit of Vostok 4. Vostok 3 completed 64 orbits in 94 hours, 24 minutes, while Vostok 4 made 48 orbits in 70 hours, 57 minutes. In 1963, Nikolayev married the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova; they divorced in 1980. As Soviet space flights were never publicized in advance, this photograph was most likely taken when there were only four Soviet cosmonauts, between Nikolayev and Popovich's 1962 flights and Valery Bykovsky's June 14, 1963 flight aboard Vostok 5. Lightly soiled and stained at lower margin. Pinhead-sized stain touches the beginning of Titov's signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
