Also pictured is Gherman S. Titov, who did not sign. On April 12, 1961, YURI GAGARIN
(1934-1968), aboard Vostok 1, made the first space flight by a human being (1 hour and
48 minutes), putting the Soviet Union ahead in the space race. The first dual launch took
place on August 11 and 12, 1962. Vostok 3, with ANDRIYAN NIKOLAYEV
(1929-2004) aboard, and Vostok 4, manned by PAVYEL POPOVICH (1930-2009), came
within three miles of each other during the first orbit of Vostok 4. Vostok 3 completed
64 orbits in 94 hours and 24 minutes, while Vostok 4 made 48 orbits in 70 hours and 57
minutes. Lightly soiled at lower margin. Ink smudged at the signatures of Gagarin and
Nikolayev. Otherwise, fine condition.
