Clipped signature of Columbus Delano as Commissioner of the U. S. Office of Internal Revenue, a post he held before being appointed Secretary of State
Clipped signature: "CDelano" as Commissioner of the Office of Internal Revenue. Lead pencil notation in upper right corner and black ink notation in lower left corner and on mounting paper, both in unknown hand. 3¾x2 signature mounted to 3¾x2 card and 4½x4½ green mounting paper. Titled: "Treasury Department,/Office of Internal Revenue,/OFFICIAL BUSINESS". Delano served as United States Commissioner of Internal Revenue from March of 1869 until Nov. 1 1870, when he was appointed U. S. Secretary of the Interior. Delano (1809-1896, Shoreham, Vermont) was a member of the United States' Delano political family. He represented Ohio in the House of Representatives as a Whig (1845-1847) and as a Republican (1865-1867, 1868-1869). He was also President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of the Interior from 1870 to 1875. Lightly toned and soiled. Upper left corner is missing. Bottom edge has been torn off and replaced. Mounting paper has irregular edges and discolored right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
