Columbus Delano signed this manuscript letter as President Ulysses S.
Grant's Secretary of the Interior on U. S. Department of the Interior letterhead
in 1874, requesting five copies of the Congressional Directory.
Manuscript letter signed "CDelano" as Secretary of the
Interior. 1 page, 7½x9¾, on ruled letterhead of the Department of the
Interior with Congressional embossing in upper left corner. Feb. 26, 1874.
Addressed to Ben Perley Poore, Clerk of Printing Records, U. S. Senate.
In full: "Sir: I have the honor to request that you will cause to be
furnished for the use of this Department and the Bureau's thereof of 5 copies of
the new edition of the Congressional Directory. I am Very Respectfully."
Delano (1809-1896, Shoreham, Vermont) was a member of the United
States' Delano political family. He represented Ohio in the House of
Representatives as a Whig (1845-1847) and as a Republican (1865-1867,
1868-1869). He was also President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of the
Interior from 1870 to 1875. Lightly toned, foxed, soiled and creased. Folded
twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
