ALEX VRACIU In this signed black and white photograph, the flying ace holds up six fingers to celebrate shooting down six Japanese planes in eight minutes Photograph signed: "Alex Vraciu". B/w, 10x8. Alexander Vraciu (1918-2015) was the Navy's fourth highest scoring ace of World War II, notching 19 kills. On June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea ("the Marianas turkey shoot"), Vraciu shot down 6 Japanese planes in a span of 8 minutes, the feat he is shown celebrating here. Shot down over the Philippines later that year, he led a band of Philippine guerrillas until linking up with U.S. forces. His decorations included the Navy Cross. After the war, Vraciu was a test pilot and squadron commander, winning the Navy's gunnery competition in 1957. Top right corner lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
