(Ret)/8-15-90", 1½p, separate sheets, 8½x11. Titled: "Near-Death by
Depth Charge!" In part: "As a very young man, not yet 22, I
reached the Pacific to help win the war with Japan. Being both young and
patriotic, I had gotten there as quickly as I could and I was serving as a
junior officer in a modern Fleet Type submarine, carrying the war to the very
doorstep of the enemy. I was the Assistant Gunnery Officer, very eager - and
very naive...." The nuclear fast attack submarine USS Thresher was
commissioned on August 3, 1961 with Commander Dean L. Axene in command. On
April 10, 1963, after repairing one of her ballast tanks work, she started
deep-diving tests east of Cape Cod, Mass. Garbled communications were
transmitted, indicating trouble aboard the submarine. The USS Thresher
sunk, taking the lives of 129 officers, crewmen and civilian technicians.
Remarks prepared by Admiral Axene, who could not attend, were read at the
40th anniversary commemoration of this tragedy. Creased at top edge and margin.
