The aide-de-camp for French President Grévy pens this letter to General Winfield Scott
Hancock in 1881
Autograph Letter Signed: "Comd. Lichtenstein" in French, in iron gall ink, 2p, 5½x8¼ folded
and 10¾x8¼ adjoined leaves. New York, 1881 November 2. Two centralized vertical folds.
Toned. Gently creased throughout. Otherwise, fine condition. Also included is an English
translation of the letter, 2p, 5x8 folded, and 10x8 unfolded adjoined leaves. Vertical fold
running the length of letter, affecting both pages. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
To "My General". In full: "Being unable, greatly to my regret, to visit you at the seat of you
command, before my departure, which takes place immediately, I do not wish to leave the United
States without expressing my gratitude for the kindness which you have always shown me and for
the attentions which you bestowed on me during my stay at Yorktown. I feel much flattered that
you have kindly permitted me to send you from France my modest photograph, and I would be
happy to possess that of the brave soldier who fought so valiantly for the glory and unity of his
country. I am with great respect/ Your obedient servant". Commander Lichtenstein was a
member of President Grévy's military household. He served as a representative for his
Excellency, François Paul Jules Grévy, the President of the French Republic from 1879 to
1887 who reported to General Winfield Scott Hancock. Two items.
